Global Girl

I love anything globally inspired and Anna Sui always has amazing prints, embroideries, and appliques that make you feel like you can skip across the world and fit in everywhere.  I had a gift card from my birthday yesterday from Anthropologie, which would be the first place I would go to find something Anna Sui-ish, and I found a super cute embroidered skirt which I am "modeling" above.  Sort of has a Spanish/Moorish inspired feel to it which brings me back to my trip to Granada and the Alhambra.. Dying to travel somewhere!!

New Madonna for LV

Check out Madonna's newest campaign images for Louis Vuitton.  (Thanks Sassi Sam!)  So much photoshopping, but I do like the sort of metallic-y chrome  finish to it.  It adds some depth to it rather than being flat and Madonna does look pretty amazing.  Speaking of Marc, WWD reports that his wedding to Lorenzo has been pushed back to August due to hectic work schedules.  The two are set to wed in Provincetown, Mass at Marc's business partner, Robert Duffy's vacation home.  Congrats to both of them!

Would You Wear Spikes in Your Hair?

FabSugar posted Jennifer Behr's new Fall 09 collection and its definitely rockin.  But how much is too much punk?  It is definitely on trend, but when it comes to hair accessories there is a fine line between looking like Blair Waldorf and looking like you belong in Piccadilly Circus.   I'm still trying to decide if these could work if your outfit is straight up plain or if they work mainly for editorial purposes.  Either way, the rest of her collection is gorgeous and not all pieces are as statement as these.. Jennifer was inspired by Victorian jet jewelry which you can see more in some of the other pieces.  Check the whole collection out here.

Battle of the Glossies

For years, Robbie Myers has been quietly staying in the background, working on putting Elle on the forefront of the pack through different mediums.  Elle linked up with Project Runway, launched its own reality show, Stylista, both which put a face to editors Nina Garcia and Ann Slowey.  Legendary photog and Creative Director Gilles Bensimon left, bringing about a change in vision with Joe Zee bringing his experience from Vitals into the magazine.  Elle also brought in one of my favorite stylists, Kate Lanphear, who can be partly credited with giving Elle its rock star edge that it does so well.  Seems like all of that plotting and planning has paid off for Elle.

According to Forbes, Elle has beaten top competitor, Vogue, in number of ad pages for the first quarter of '09.  Vogue has been accused of slipping lately, a change that I've noticed as I've been finding the iconic glossie less interesting than Elle, Bazaar, Instyle etc.  Interestingly, Vogue cites that putting Gossip Girl and partly over-exposed Blake Lively on the cover was too "down market".  (Blake shares the same publicist as Lindsay Lohan, just sayin)  I feel that's it's not so much the celebrity on the cover, because Vogue did put Michelle Obama in J.Crew on the cover, but the overall content of the magazine has been less interesting.  Elle has pages and pages of trends, mixing high and low and bringing in more edgy content than a stuffier Vogue and even Bazaar has been shaking things up by adding spoofs with Jonah Hill bringing in a younger, hipper, and more relatable audience.
Despite the positive news, ad pages are still in a decline as a whole.  Elle is down 22% and Vogue is down 32 %, which is still concerning as magazines can't seem to find their footing again with the internet and a volatile financial market.

Can Vogue make a comeback especially with the debut of The September Issue (both the actual issue and the movie/documentary)?   Or will Elle hold on?

Birthday!

Today is Saucy Glossie's birthday!  (Well, it is actually my birthday, not Saucy's...there will be a celebration for that next April) I can tell today is already going to be a great day because Roger Federer is playing at Wimbledon right now, beating Soderling (again) in a cute white and gold outfit.

Check out some of my bday gifts:  a cute Pencey studded vest and a Banana Republic clutch.  The clutch has a total Rachel Zoe feel to it.  For some reason I picture her carrying this and wearing Halston to Studio 54.  And of course my cake has neon flowers because neon is so in right now and I'm an 80's baby which just fits perfectly.

Designer Knockoffs- the Personal Edition

This really strikes me to the core.  I didn't spend 3 hours at the Bergdorf shoe sale a few weeks ago pondering how I could finagle buying my favorite shoes in the world, my YSL black leather stilettos for Bebe to knock them off.  Don't get me wrong, I'm all about designer knockoffs and recreating designer looks cheaper, but something about this is a little too close.  They even captured the indentation in the front and the stitching on the leather!  Can you tell which is which?

Spotlight on......

The presence of true craftsmanship in design sometimes gets lost today in Asian factories and mass production lines.  Designer and French It-girl Rose Anne De Pampelonne's namesake line of  apparel and jewelry might be the furthest you can get from that.  Deep in the Himalayas, skilled artisans in Nepal work meticulously on her one of a kind ornate pieces.  Her skills as an  accomplished interior designer have given her a unique perspective on detail and decor of her designs.  She adopts a philosophy that her clients jet-set so often that who wants to lug around heavy jewelry to jazz up their clothes?  So she eliminated the need to do so by incorporating beautiful beading and stone work on the clothing.  What sets her apart from the rest of designers who are heavy on embellishment is the hand sewn, unique cultural technique, which is unlike anything around.

Don't believe that these garments can be so perfect without the use of a machine?  Check out this video!  So inspiring and a gorgeous reminder that true artisanship has not disappeared.  I have been dying to take a trip over to Nepal and Bhutan and this may just be the push I needed to make this next on my destination list!

Another factoid:  Rose Anne sells to Ikram boutique in Chicago.. could we see Michelle Obama rocking one of her fabulous creations?

Whats the Scoop, Duckie Brown?

Florsheim, one of the oldest shoe makers around, partnered up with small but uber-buzzed about menswear line Duckie Brown for a new line of menswear shoes.  The Scoop Men's store celebrated the collaboration with Pabst Blue Ribbon beers (and only Pabst Blue Ribbons)  and tables full of the sleek and chic collection.
Daniel Silver, one half of the founders of DB, spoke with me about how he was able to revamp and sauce up the line.  Getting the story while sharing PBRs made me get a true sense of the type of man that they can appeal to.  A man's man straight man can rock the lace-less loafer while still looking not too trendy and the fashionista guy can chose the metallic silver and make it look effortlessly stylish (like Daniel himself did last night).
The story is one to remember as the two iconic mens brands came across each other through a prom dream come true.  A young high-schooler wrote into Duckie Brown hoping and pleading for them to dress him for his prom.  He said all he needs and loves is girls, rock, and Duckie Brown... The designers, after much oscillating thought, agreed and also had just happened to send the boy an old pair of Florsheim shoes from past runway shows.  The New Yorker had picked up the story and when the Florsheim family picked up on the article, a match in designer collaboration heaven was made.
Daniel told me that they took the classic shoes and turned up the juice by using a higher quality of materials like Italian leather and energetic colors like electric blue, which was my favorite and was also one of the biggest colors and styles bought for Fall.  The price point is nice for men's shoes ranging from $250-$450 roughly depending on the style and material.   Each shoe has a red color under the tongue to keep the integrity of the Florsheim brand's family heritage rich in a long blood line (thus the red color) of family successors.  Scoop picked up these more classic styles below, but my fav is still the electric blue.

Check out these shoes at Scoop's Mens store downtown on Washington street

Life with Bird

There are always instances when getting dressed when you feel like you are missing something basic but chic in your wardrobe.  You end up spending all your money on pieces that you find trendy at the time and then you have nothing to pair with them.  Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor's new line, Bird, consists of pieces that you always wished you had in your wardrobe.  A sleek, chic black pencil skirt, a slouchy black sweater, that staple black wool coat that carries you all through winter...  Bird's small 30 piece collection fills those voids.  Unlike its little sister line Juicy Couture which is more laid back and sometimes trend focused, Bird consists of timeless pieces that can be considered investments without a super investment price.  And these pieces are far from dull, bridging a gap between a closet staple basic and a piece with enviable details.  They also updated their signature track suit, adding a skinny leg and a more urban, edgy older sister look (see top left image).  I am absolutely looking forward to living in that suit year round..perfect flight-chic outfit.

The showing was held in a suite at the newly renovated Plaza Hotel, which is absolutely magnificent.  Conveniently located next to Bergdorf Goodman, I swung by the shoe sale....again... and shoes are now 50 percent off and there are still heaps of shoes, FYI.

.

Bird hits store in August selling at Bergdorf Goodman, select Juicy stores, and for all of you non-New Yorkers you can get your hands on these pieces on Net-A-Porter or online at Juicycouture.com.  Pieces start at $150 with most pieces around 300, unless its outerwear which can go up to $1000.

Weekly, Is that You?

I haven't been buying weeklies lately.. partly because I can get the same info free on the internet..and partly because I remember when they used to cost $1.99 and now they are $3.99.. but when I passed by this cover today I had to get it.  Not because I really really wanted to know about the "dirty secrets" of Real Housewives, but because there is barely a presence of any real celebrities on the cover.  Jon and Kate have been on the cover of US and other weeklies for a number of consecutive weeks.  Now the Housewives make front page news with a teeny tiny picture of mega-star Jen Aniston in the corner.  I'm not saying they are undeserving, because the infamous table flip brought in mega ratings, but it definitely raises some  questions and discussions about the direction of American celebrity culture.

Discuss amongst yourselves, glossie posse.

Second Time Around

Alex McCord from the Real Housewives of New York City threw a petit soiree last night at her new consignment shop, Second Time Around.   Located on one of my favorite streets, Mott Street, the store specializes in contemporary new and resale designer clothing.  I saw everything from Ella Moss and Diane Von Furstenberg to Miu Miu and Chanel.  There were Raven jeans going for just $72 dollars.  One of my favorite pieces in the store is this long wool Chanel coat... so cool.

I wore a full Cynthia Steffe outfit last night with Christian Louboutin T-strap pumps.  This is one of my favorite skirts ever due to the unique texture of the skirt and flattering tulip shape.  LOVE

And to make the evening even better, there was a cupcake truck parked outside the store...Shopping and cupcakes, you cannot create a better evening than that.

High Street Rocks

I can already tell that it is going to be a great Fall season for the high street stores.  Browsing in Zara this morning, I went into sensory overload with all of the pieces that looked fall enough to buy and wear now then carry over and layer with later.  And Coutorture gave a sneak peek at H&M's fall lookbook which is brilliantly styled.

Check out this look which totally has a Rodarte thing going on (I can't even comment on the Rodarte boots because they are that amazing).  I hate to say that finally someone knocked off the CFDA winner's designs, because I'm sure the girls wouldn't appreciate that very much, but it does however mean that the design and fashion world is watching them very closely.  And it also means that I can rock the Rodarte look without plunking down 2 months rent....... Just sayin

And the Divided Exclusive Collection for H&M Fall looks amazing also, keeping on trend with the badass sexy look.  I love these pieces...the tweed shorts are so cute and I'm so looking forward to wearing shorts for fall just like these and the Chloe ones.

And of course, when I do purchase these shorts, it is only fitting that I try to track down this Chanel costume jewelry ring...It has Chanel tweed and chains wrapped through it!

This post proves that you really don't need to leave your house to shop, as I am already building a mental shopping list in my head.  A Saucy Glossie reader wrote me today and told me that I was to blame/thank for persuading her via sample sale post to buy some cute Alice and Olivia dresses...in which case, I'm sorry and you're welcome.

Wonderland

Yesterday,  pictures surfaced of Johnny Depp and Anne Hathaway who will be staring in the new Alice in Wonderland....which already sounded amazing until I saw these costume pictures, and now it sounds and looks incredible.  The actors are not only transformed by costume and make-up, but are also digitally changed to enhance their appearance and enhance the psychedelic feel that Alice and Wonderland always has evoked.  I smell not only a probable Oscar for the acting but for the costume design as well... Check out the full article here.

On the same whimsical path, I checked out an art exhibition by NY artist Erna Leon Barsegian last night at Hudson Terrace.  Erna actually draws her inspiration from the best elements of surrealism and magical realism, which has the same effect as Alice in Wonderland...sort of a psychedelic trip into the artistic world.  The pieces were extremely beautiful and rich in texture and had so many layers to it that you could stare in awe for hours and still find new elements of the work.  The pieces were at an amazing price, ranging from $1000-$6000 roughly.  For contact info for Erna, email at info@ernaleon.com

Speaking of art, inspired to take a trip to the Met today to check out some old favorites and also check out the Model as Muse exhibit!

Hermione Grows Up

Emma Watson will grace the cover of Teen Vogue next month.. This brit-it girl has recently had a slew of fashion related projects come her way including a Burberry campaign.  Not hard to believe when you see how well clothing takes to Hermione-all-grown-up.   Emma works a darling English Countryside shoot showcasing a mixture of beautiful materials... brocades, chiffon, velvets.. all thrown together in typical Teen Vogue style.  Also, Fashionista.com reported today that there are rumors of Emma designing her own line, which might just be something to get excited about.  Move over Kate Moss?

I love boyfriend jeans.  They tie for #1 in comfort with leggings.  Kind of digging the androgyny of them and the fact that it looks like I ran over my jeans 4 times with a Mack truck.  And when I saw Current Elliot come out with boyfriend jeans for around 200 I knew I could find them cheaper....which I did at Zara.  This is by far one of my most favorite vests that I snatched up at a 3.1 Phillip Lim sample sale for like $40 dollars a few season ago.  Not sure how I feel about still not being able to wear summery dresses due to this outrageous weather, but at least my spring stuff is getting stretched out longer!

Jeans: Zara
Vest: 3.1 Phillip Lim
Hat: Target
Tank: JCrew
Necklace: American Eagle
